Top 10 Reasons Kids Don't Need Phones

Forget the saying Wait until 8th- wait until they are driving and need a phone.
Until then- let's let them be kids.
1. Kids need time for their minds to grow and develop without outside influences. FACT: Studies show that heavy social media use is linked to declines in key cognitive abilities essential for learning and memory.
2. Kids need to be learning how to make relationships with friends in real life. FACT: Media-free upbringing encourages face-to-face interactions, which are crucial for developing social skills.
3. Kids cannot unsee or unhear something they are exposed to at young ages, those images will stay with them and change the way they see themselves, their parents, their peers, their siblings; and affect the way the see the world from that moment forward. FACT: What children see online can significantly impact their mental health, behavior, and development. Exposure to inappropriate content, cyberbullying, and unrealistic comparisons on social media can lead to issues such as anxiety, depression, and low self-esteem.
4. Kids and teens become addicted to their phones. FACT: Youth can become overly attached to their phones, leading to unhealthy habits. If not managed properly, phone use can become an addictive behavior that negatively affects their development. A recent study published in The Journal of Child & Adolescent Psychiatric Nursing found physical, psychological and social issues associated with excessive smartphone use. PHONES ARE AS ADDICTIVE AS DRUGS.
5. Phones are a distraction that divides families and removes opportunities for youth to make meaningful relationships. Phones can distract kids from schoolwork, activities, and face-to-face interactions with family and friends. Constant notifications and the temptation to check games or social media can take away from more important things. FACT: The constant availability of information and communication can lead to feelings of being overwhelmed, affecting mental health.
6. The devil can exploit phone distractions to create disconnection and conflict in relationships. FACT: Satan employs tactics to create discord and division, particularly in relationships grounded in Christian values. He may use negative thinking, withdrawal, and compulsive behaviors to undermine connections between individuals. 40% of depressed and suicidal youth reported problematic social media use.
7. Social media sites are responsible for the rise in mental health among youth. FACT: 1 in 5 youth report mental health issues, with anxiety being the most prevalent- all tied to social media. 48% of teens say social media has a mostly negative effect on people their age — up from 32% in 2022
8. Phones create an atmosphere on being on call 24/7 which also causes anxiety in kids. FACT: The pressure to stay connected can lead to exhaustion and burnout among youth. While connected, many feel overwhelmed, leading to difficulties in forming meaningful relationships.
9. Time spent by kids on their phones as opposed to time hanging out with friends is time wasted on worldly things rather than building up relationships and memories as God intended in person. FACT: Almost three-quarters (72%) of 8 to 12-year-olds say they would rather spend most of their time together doing things in-person, without screens (rather than spend most of their time together on screens and devices).
10. Time spent monitoring your kids’ phone rather than spending that time with them – should literally crush your heart. FACT: Kids need time with their parents. There is no time wasted when it’s spent enjoying the gift God gave you. Stop giving into what the world says they need and start focusing back on what you know their heart needs. They need time with you. They need time without a phone or technology in their face.
